Keep an eye on Rogue Romance

Today’s Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds features a sneaky-good Triple Crown contender in Rogue Romance.

The son of Smarty Jones, trained by Ken McPeek, is flying somewhat under the radar because his best performances have come on turf. However, he’s displayed the grit and the versatility to make an impact down the lane.

After running fourth in his first start, Rogue Romance broke his maiden in August at Saratoga going two turns on the turf. That day, he stalked the pace in second before pouncing in the lane to win. Next time out, it was a different story. In the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland, Rogue Romance broke slowly and was pinched back. He didn’t take kindly to kickback in his face and was 12th, over seven lengths behind the leaders, with just over a quarter mile to go. The colt unleashed a dazzling turn of foot down the lane to win by 2 ½ going away. It was encouraging to witness his reaction to adversity; although clearly shaken, the colt was still able to adjust his running style and give his best when it counted.

Rogue Romance turned in a solid performance in his first start on dirt, finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile behind unbeaten champion Uncle Mo and Hopeful winner Boys At Tosconova.

With three solid two-turn performances under his belt, if Rogue Romance can continue his transition to the dirt, he’ll be a major player.
